Punishments

How mutes and bans work, how they escalate, and how to appeal.

#The idea

Punishments get longer each time you repeat the same kind of offense. A first offense is often a warning or a short mute, and repeat offenders reach permanent punishments.

Staff may give a warning first for some offenses. Where they do, the ladders below start from your second offense.

#Escalation

The steps repeat per category. The last step is permanent. These are the standard ladders.

Offense Type Escalation
Chat offense (spam, mild language) Mute 30 minutes, 1 hour, 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, then permanent
Toxic chat, harassment, filter bypass Mute 30 minutes, 1 hour, 3 hours, 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, then permanent
NSFW or controversial talk, minor advertising Mute 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, 14 days, 1 month, then permanent
Severe chat offense Mute Permanent immediately
Griefing, stealing, trolling, teleport trapping Ban 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, 14 days, 1 month, then permanent
Glitching into restricted areas Ban From 30 minutes, rising through hours, a week, a month, then permanent
Scamming, unapproved trades or links Ban 12 hours, 1 day, 3 days, then permanent
"Fun" hacks (client mods) Ban From 30 minutes, rising through hours, a week, a month, then permanent
Hacking (movement and combat cheats) Ban 3 days, 7 days, 14 days, 1 month, then permanent

Some offenses can lead to an IP ban or a permanent ban straight away.

#Automatic mutes

The chat filter can mute you automatically. It uses the same escalation as above. Severe offenses, such as hate speech, are an immediate permanent mute.

Warning Using an alternate account to get around a ban or mute is itself against the rules. Accounts that log in from the same connection as a banned account can be banned automatically.

#Blocked a message by mistake?

If the filter blocked something harmless, run /filterreport right after to report your most recent blocked message as a mistake. Staff review these.

#Appeals

If you think a punishment was wrong, open a ticket or submit an appeal through the Blockville Discord. The ban screen shows where. Be honest and polite, and include what happened. Don't ask staff to remove it in game chat.
