Chess & Checkers

Playable chess and checkers tables - sitting down, clocks, the rules, playing the bot, and how games end.

Chess and checkers can be played on the boards placed around Blockville. Two players sit at a table and play a full game on the board in front of them, with a clock, a move outline and the complete rules of each game. A player without an opponent can play against the bot.

Start Right-click a board to sit down
Command /boardgame (or /chess, /checkers)
Clocks Bullet, Blitz, Rapid, Classical or no clock
Opponent Another player, or the bot

#Playing a game

  1. Sit down. Right-click a board to take a seat. The first player to sit plays White in chess and Red in checkers.
  2. Choose a clock. The first player chooses a time control from the menu.
  3. Wait for an opponent. The game starts when a second player sits at the other side, or the first player can play the bot with /boardgame bot.
  4. Move. Click one of your pieces to pick it up, then click the square to move it to. Only legal moves are accepted.

The last move is outlined on the board, and in chess a king in check glows.

#Time controls

Clock Time Added per move
Bullet 1 minute none
Blitz 3 minutes 2 seconds
Rapid 10 minutes none
Classical 30 minutes none
No clock Unlimited 5 minutes for each move

A player whose clock reaches zero loses. With no clock, a player who takes longer than 5 minutes over a single move loses.

#Chess

Chess follows the standard rules, including castling, en passant, and promotion. When a pawn reaches the far rank a menu opens to choose a queen, rook, bishop or knight. A game ends in:

  • Checkmate, which wins the game
  • Stalemate, a draw
  • A draw by the fifty-move rule, threefold repetition, or insufficient material
  • A draw by agreement, when both players offer one with /boardgame draw

#Checkers

Checkers is played on the dark squares, and Red moves first. Pieces move diagonally forward one square.

  • Captures are forced. If a capture is possible, it must be taken.
  • Multi-jumps: after a capture, the same piece keeps jumping while it can.
  • Kings: a piece that reaches the far row is crowned and can then move and capture backwards.

A player wins by capturing all of the opponent's pieces or leaving them with no legal move.

#Leaving a game

A player loses the game by:

  • Resigning with /boardgame resign
  • Leaving with /boardgame leave
  • Walking more than 24 blocks away from the board for 20 seconds
  • Logging off
  • Running out of time
